Custom WordPress development

Custom WordPress development means the theme, the content fields and the admin screens are built for your site, rather than bought and bent until they nearly fit. You get a custom theme on the Sage/Roots stack with ACF, where each band of a page is a block your team can edit, reorder or hide without a developer. Most WordPress work here starts where a bought theme ran out of room: a layout it will not do, a plugin stack nobody dares update, an editing screen that fights the person using it. We have shipped 800+ projects for 437 clients since 2008.

Frequently asked questions
What is custom WordPress development?

Custom WordPress development means building the theme, the content fields and the admin screens for one specific site, instead of buying a theme and bending it to fit. The site is still WordPress and your team still edits it in wp-admin, but nothing on the page is there because a theme author decided it should be. At Green Wire Media the default for a new custom build is the Sage/Roots stack with Advanced Custom Fields, which keeps the front-end code lean and keeps the editing screens close to the way the client already thinks about their own content.

How is a custom theme different from a premium theme or a page builder?

A premium theme is written for thousands of sites, so it carries every option any of them might want and ships the code for all of them whether you switch them on or not. A page builder then adds a further layer of markup and JavaScript on top. A custom theme contains only what your site actually uses. The difference shows up in three places: page weight and Core Web Vitals, how much of the original design survives contact with the CMS, and how safe updates are, because there is no third-party theme author whose next release can move your layout.

Do you use page builders like Elementor?

Yes, where it suits the project. Green Wire Media works with Elementor, Divi and WPBakery, and many of the sites we take over are built on one of them. For a new custom build our default is the Sage/Roots stack with ACF, because the code is cleaner and the result is faster. Where a client’s team is already fluent in their builder and the site does not need to be exceptional on speed, staying put is often the honest recommendation rather than a rebuild.

What does a custom WordPress site cost?

It is driven by the number of templates, how many of them are genuinely different from each other, how much of the content has to be modelled as proper fields rather than typed into one big editor, and how many outside systems the site has to talk to. We scope those before quoting, and the price is then fixed rather than moving in the middle of the build. Our cost calculator gives an honest range for a build of your size, including the running costs that a quote for the build alone leaves out.

Will our team still be able to edit the site, or do we need a developer for every change?

You edit it, and that is most of the point of building it this way. Each band of a page is a flexible-content block with its own fields, so your team can change a section, reorder the page, hide a band, or build a whole new page out of blocks that already exist. Anything an editor could break by mistyping an HTML tag is designed out instead: a highlighted phrase in a heading is its own field rather than markup somebody has to hand-write. We hand over with training, not with a login and good luck.

Who owns the code, and can another developer take it over?

You own all of it: the code, the design files, the domain, the hosting and every account. We write themes to be read by somebody else, documented and structured the way any WordPress developer would expect, so another team can pick the project up without us. That matters most to the agencies and consultants we build for, because the site is handed on to their client at the end. We are equally happy to take over a custom WordPress site somebody else built, and we will tell you plainly whether it is worth keeping or worth rebuilding.

We’ll tell you the truth.
