Yelp is inside ChatGPT now. In most countries your Foursquare business listing is what feeds it.

OpenAI licensed Yelp's reviews on 23 July 2026. Yelp's own docs cover 32 countries, so what puts a business in a ChatGPT answer depends on where you trade.

On 23 July 2026, OpenAI and Yelp announced that ChatGPT would start using Yelp’s reviews, ratings, photos and business details in local answers. Within a week the advice had settled into a shape: claim your Yelp page, work your Yelp reviews, keep your name and address consistent, wait.

For a business in Riga, Vilnius, Tallinn, Warsaw’s smaller neighbours, Bucharest, Nairobi or Mumbai, most of that advice describes a door that is not there.

The short answer

ChatGPT’s local answers rest on two different layers, and the Yelp deal only touched one of them. The place layer decides whether your business exists as an entity the assistant can name at all, and OpenAI’s supplier there is Foursquare, whose own product page says its Places data powers OpenAI and which publishes coverage across more than 200 countries. The review layer is what Yelp now licenses, and Yelp’s own developer documentation covers 32 countries and territories. If you trade outside those 32, the Yelp news changes nothing you can act on, and the record that decides whether you appear is your Foursquare business listing plus your own website.

What OpenAI and Yelp actually agreed

The facts worth holding, each from a source rather than from the commentary around it.

Yelp licensed reviews, ratings, photos and business information to OpenAI. Yelp confirmed the arrangement in its own results release on 12 February 2026, in one line from its chief executive: “we recently signed an agreement with OpenAI.” The detail became public on 23 July 2026.

Three things follow that the coverage mostly skipped.

It is non-exclusive. Yelp is free to sign the same deal with anyone else, and said so. This is a supply arrangement, not a marriage.

It is additive, not a replacement. Nothing was switched off. ChatGPT did not move from Google to Yelp, and it was never wired to Google Business Profile as a licensed source in the first place. If you have read that it “switched”, that is the news cycle compressing a supply deal into a rivalry.

Request a Quote has not shipped. The lead-generation half, where a ChatGPT user contacts a service provider without leaving the conversation, was described as planned. That is the part with real commercial weight and it is not live yet.

And one thing neither company has published: which countries the integration covers. We could not find it stated anywhere, so the honest position is that it is unknown. What is knowable is the outer bound, which is what Yelp has to give.

Two layers, and only one of them belongs to Yelp

This is the distinction the entire week of commentary went without, and once you have it the rest of the decision is easy.

The place layer answers a prior question: does this business exist, what is it called, where is it, what category is it in. Foursquare’s own business listings page states it plainly: “Foursquare Places powers leading consumer apps like OpenAI, Apple Maps, which reach billions of users monthly.” Foursquare publishes coverage of more than 100 million points of interest across more than 200 countries, built on more than 16 billion verified check-ins. That arrangement with OpenAI dates from December 2024, nineteen months before the Yelp announcement, and almost nobody has connected the two.

The review layer answers a later question: how good is it, what do people say, what does it look like. That is what Yelp now supplies, and it can only supply it where Yelp has content.

Miss the first layer and the second one never gets consulted, because there is no entity for the reviews to attach to. Every “get more reviews” recommendation published in the last two weeks is advice about the second layer, delivered to people who have not been told the first one exists.

Which countries does Yelp actually cover?

Yelp’s own developer documentation lists the supported locales, and they resolve to 32 countries and territories: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, the Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Not on that list: Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, and every EU member state not named above. Also India, China, the whole of Africa, the Middle East, and most of Central and Eastern Europe.

Yelp’s own business support material is blunter than any third party has been. It says Yelp “currently features pages in the following countries” and then: “For now, we can’t feature businesses in other countries.” That is an eligibility rule, not a support limitation. There is no page to claim, no listing to optimise and no review strategy to run.

Now the number that tells you what the list is worth. In its Form 10-K for fiscal 2025, filed with the SEC on 27 February 2026, Yelp reported net revenue of $1,455.3 million from the United States and $9.7 million from all other countries combined, out of a $1,465.0 million total. That is 0.66% from everywhere else on earth. The same filing describes Yelp’s community team as “based across the United States and Canada” and its markets as having “high penetration rates in most major geographic markets within the United States and Canada.”

Two more small checks, both run on 6 August 2026. Yelp’s public directory page says “Browse 157 cities on Yelp, all around the world!” and every city on it is American, with no country selector anywhere in the markup. And 330.2 million cumulative reviews sounds like a global corpus until you put it next to that revenue line: it is a very large amount of content about one country.

None of that makes Yelp a weak partner for OpenAI. In the United States it is an excellent one. It makes the advice built on it a regional answer being published as a universal one.

The ad layer moves on the same map

Worth noticing, because it shows the shape of the whole build rather than one deal.

OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT on 9 February 2026, in the United States only, on the Free and Go tiers. By 6 June 2026 the pilot covered the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom, with Japan, South Korea, Brazil and Mexico named as next, per OpenAI’s VP of Monetization. The UK was described as the first European market. A self-serve Ads Manager opened on 22 July 2026, one day before the Yelp announcement, and it carries a campaign type that routes an ad click into a business agent conversation rather than to a website.

Every one of those live ad markets is also a Yelp locale country. None is in the Baltics or in Central and Eastern Europe. The commercial layer of ChatGPT is being built Anglophone-first, and it is arriving in a specific order.

What is a Foursquare business listing, and what does it feed?

It is your business’s record in Foursquare Places: name, address, coordinates, category, hours, phone, website. Foursquare stopped being a consumer app people think about, which is exactly why it disappeared from the conversation, and it kept the part that matters, which is the dataset it licenses to other companies.

You can claim and manage it yourself at business.foursquare.com. Foursquare’s description of the product is the plain version: “Easily keep your contact information, hours, website, and other business details up to date across the entire Foursquare ecosystem.” Foursquare does not publish the terms on the entry page, so check what verification it asks of you at claim time rather than trusting a blog post about it, including this one.

Here is the measurement that made us write this piece rather than a shorter one. On 6 August 2026 we ran a fixed set of ten questions across Perplexity, ChatGPT and Gemini, thirty answers in all, and counted how often Foursquare was named:

Question askedTimes Foursquare was named, all three engines
How does ChatGPT decide which local businesses to recommend?0
How do I get my business to show up in ChatGPT?0
Does ChatGPT use Yelp reviews?0
What should a business owner do after the OpenAI Yelp deal?0
Should a business outside the US claim a Yelp page for AI search?0
What is a Foursquare business listing and does it still matter in 2026?57

The engines know about Foursquare perfectly well. They simply never bring it up unless you already knew the word, which means the business owner asking the obvious question is reliably sent to work on the wrong layer.

Two more results from the same run, both worth knowing before you take advice from an assistant about assistants. All three engines answered yes to whether a business outside the United States should claim a Yelp page, and not one of them mentioned that in most countries there is no page to claim. And ChatGPT’s own answer to “does ChatGPT use Yelp reviews?” was “not directly in the sense of ‘ChatGPT reads Yelp on demand every time’”, with no mention of the licence its own company had signed.

The plan, if Yelp exists where you trade

You are in one of the 32. Work in this order, because the order is the point.

1. Fix the place layer first. Claim the Foursquare listing, and make the name, address, coordinates, category and hours exactly right. If the pin is in the wrong place or the category is wrong, no amount of review work rescues it.

2. Then claim Yelp, and treat it as a lead surface rather than a reputation exercise. The reason is Request a Quote. When it lands, a ChatGPT user will be able to reach a service provider inside the conversation, and the businesses reachable that way will be the ones with a claimed, complete, responsive Yelp presence. That is a different bar from having good ratings. Response time and completeness will matter more than star average.

3. Keep the entity consistent across both, and across your own site. One legal name, one address format, one phone number. This is old advice and it is still correct, because it is what lets a system decide two records are the same business.

4. Make your own site machine-readable. LocalBusiness structured data with address, hours, geo coordinates and service area. Prices and service descriptions as text on the page rather than inside images. Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt, because blocking it removes you from the retrieval layer entirely while leaving your Google rankings untouched, which makes it an invisible failure.

5. If you are in a live ads market, decide about ads separately. The Ads Manager is a media buy with its own economics, and it is not a substitute for being in the dataset. Being absent from the place layer and buying ads to compensate is the most expensive version of this problem.

The plan, if it does not

You are in Latvia, or Lithuania, Estonia, Croatia, Serbia, Ukraine, India, Kenya, most of the world. There is no Yelp page in your future and no reason to want one.

1. Claim and complete the Foursquare listing. It is the layer that is actually available to you, it covers more than 200 countries, and almost nobody in your market has done it. This is the single highest-leverage item on the list and it is free of competition precisely because the news cycle pointed everyone at Yelp.

2. Treat Google Business Profile as necessary and not sufficient. In markets where Google Maps dominates, it remains the strongest single record you own and it feeds Google’s own AI surfaces directly. It is not what OpenAI licensed. Keep it immaculate and stop expecting it to do a job it was not bought for.

3. Find the two or three directories that actually carry your market. Every country has them, and in the Baltics they are catalogues, industry associations and local review sites rather than global platforms. The test is not whether a directory feels important. It is whether its pages are crawlable, indexed and specific. A listing behind a login feeds nothing.

4. Your own website carries more weight here than it does in the United States. Where there is no dense licensed review corpus for a market, retrieval leans harder on what it can crawl. That means real pages for each service and each location, in the language your customers use, with the address, hours and coverage area in text. A single-page site with a contact form is close to invisible to this whole mechanism.

5. Answer the questions your buyers actually ask, on your own domain. This is the part that transfers across every engine and every country, because it needs no licence and no partner. We wrote up the structural version of it in why AI assistants cite everyone except you.

6. Do not buy a Yelp-shaped service. If an agency proposes Yelp review management for a business in a country Yelp does not carry, that is the whole audit finished. It tells you they read the same headline you did.

Claims in circulation that do not survive a check

Four, and the last one is ours to be careful about too.

“ChatGPT switched from Google to Yelp.” It did not switch and there was nothing to switch from. Google Business Profile was never a licensed OpenAI source. The Yelp agreement is additive and non-exclusive.

“60 to 70% of ChatGPT’s local results come from Foursquare.” This number is repeating across the SEO world right now. We traced it to a single article attributing it to two researchers, with no publication date, no sample size and no method. It may well be roughly right. It is not a receipt, and we are not going to repeat it as one. What is checkable is Foursquare’s own statement that its Places data powers OpenAI, which is enough to act on without inventing a percentage.

“Claim your Yelp page for AI search, wherever you are.” All three assistants we tested said yes to this. In most countries there is no page to claim.

“Fix your listings and you will show up.” Nobody publishes how long propagation takes, including us. Make the change, write down the date you made it, and measure on a schedule rather than refreshing.

How to tell whether any of it worked

Not by referrer data, which under-reports assistant traffic badly. By asking.

Write down eight to ten questions a real customer would ask to find a business like yours, with the city in them. Ask each one on three separate days, in each engine you care about, and record two things: which businesses were named, and which sources were cited. Three samples, not one, because source replacement on ChatGPT Search is high enough that a single reading tells you close to nothing.

Then read the extremes rather than the average. A question where you are named every time is a different situation from one where you appear once in three, and the two need opposite responses. We set out why a single blended visibility number hides exactly this in what an AI visibility score hides.

That is the whole method. It costs an afternoon and it is worth more than any dashboard, because it measures the thing itself.

Quick answers

Does ChatGPT use Yelp reviews? Yes, under a licence announced on 23 July 2026, covering reviews, ratings, photos and business information. It is non-exclusive. Request a Quote inside ChatGPT was described as planned rather than shipped.

Which countries does Yelp cover? Its own developer docs list supported locales across 32 countries and territories. Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, India and most of Central and Eastern Europe are not among them, and Yelp’s support material says it cannot feature businesses in countries off that list.

So what should a business outside those 32 do? Claim the Foursquare business listing, keep Google Business Profile immaculate, find the two or three directories that genuinely carry your market, and make your own site properly readable. In that order.

Is Google Business Profile enough? Necessary, not sufficient. It is not what OpenAI licensed.

What is the single highest-leverage action? For most of the world, claiming and completing the Foursquare listing, because it is the layer that decides whether you exist in the answer at all and almost no one outside the United States has done it.

Where to start

Open business.foursquare.com, search for your own business, and look at what is already there. It probably exists, generated from public data, with something wrong in it. Fix that first. It takes twenty minutes and it is the layer everything else in this article sits on top of.

Then write your ten questions and take the first sample. Do it before you change anything else, because a baseline you did not take is not recoverable later.

If you would rather have it run properly, with the question set built for your market and the samples taken on schedule, that is what AI search visibility is as a service, and the method above is the whole of it rather than a teaser for it. If you are an agency that has just been asked about Yelp by a client in a country Yelp does not carry, tell us the market and we will tell you what actually carries it there.

Tell us what’s broken.
We’ll tell you the truth.
