The 13-minute homepage, and other records from 293,806 websites
The extremes from a near-census of the Baltic web: a homepage that takes 816 seconds to appear, one with 407,866 words, and a footer still dated 1994.
Measure one website and you learn about that website. Measure 293,806 of them and you learn where the edges of the web actually are, because at that scale somebody is always doing the extreme version of everything.
These are the records from the Baltic Web Audit, our near-census of the Latvian, Estonian and Lithuanian web in August 2026. We name no sites. The number is the story, and in most cases the number has a lesson attached that applies to a perfectly ordinary site.
In short
The gap between the best and the worst Baltic website is larger than most people would guess. The fastest homepage shows its content in 0.6 seconds and the slowest takes 816 seconds, over 13 minutes. One homepage carries 407,866 words, another sets 88 cookies before anyone consents to one, and one footer has said 1994 for three decades. None of these is a broken site. All of them are live.
Speed: from a blink to a lunch break
The slowest homepage we measured takes 816 seconds, more than 13 minutes, to paint its main content in Google’s standardised mobile test. It has company: 6,654 sites take 30 seconds or more.
The other end is genuinely good. The fastest homepage paints in 0.6 seconds, 18,118 sites get their content on screen in under a second, and 22,937 sites score a perfect 100 for mobile performance. At the bottom, 130 sites score 10 or below out of 100.
The lesson for a normal site: speed is not a talent problem. Both ends of this range are built with the same platforms, on the same hosting, in the same three countries. What separates them is whether anyone ever measured.
Weight: 3,096 requests for one page
The busiest homepage in the audit makes 3,096 separate requests on a single load. A typical homepage in this region weighs 73 to 85 KB of HTML and carries 7 to 11 images.
One homepage contacts 109 different third-party services before the visitor has clicked anything, and we detected 32 distinct technologies on a single site. Every one of those is a name somebody added deliberately, usually one at a time, usually for a good reason at the time.
The lesson: nobody decides to build a 3,096-request homepage. It accumulates, one plugin and one tracking script at a time, and it only becomes visible when someone runs the test.
Tracking: 88 cookies before you agree to anything
One homepage sets 88 cookies before any consent interaction. Not after clicking accept, before. Another, as above, reaches 109 third-party hosts on the first load.
That is the extreme version of something we found across the whole region rather than in one strange corner: setting cookies before consent is the norm in the Baltics, not the exception, and it is worst in e-commerce.
Text: a homepage roughly four novels long
One homepage carries 407,866 words. For scale, that is about four novels on a single page. Another carries 14,860 images on the homepage alone, where the regional median is 11.
The longest <title> tag we found runs 5,913 characters. Google displays about 60. The median Baltic title is 32 to 37 characters, so this one is roughly 180 times the normal length and about 99% of it can never be seen by anyone.
One homepage also lists 4,606 alternative language versions of itself in its hreflang tags.
Errors: 7,026 JavaScript errors, and the page still loads
One homepage fires 7,026 JavaScript console errors while loading. It loads anyway, which is a quiet compliment to the modern browser. Console errors are not rare either: 27 to 29% of rendered homepages in each of the three countries throw at least one.
More consequential is the site whose raw HTML file is nearly empty and whose JavaScript then builds a page roughly 56,000 times that size. To a human visitor it is a website. To anything that reads the page without running a browser, which includes most AI crawlers, it is a blank sheet.
Scale: 951,539 pages in one sitemap
The largest sitemap in the audit declares 951,539 pages. Among sites that publish a sitemap at all, the median lists 37 pages in Latvia, 35 in Estonia and 44 in Lithuania, and a quarter list 10 or fewer.
So the biggest site we found is roughly 24,000 times the size of a typical one, and both are served by the same kind of software on the same kind of hosting. Worth remembering the next time someone quotes a page count as if it meant anything on its own.
Time: a footer that has said 1994 for 30 years
The oldest footer copyright still online reads 1994. It is not alone: 142 sites show a 1990s year in the footer. And 56 sites show a year in the future, 2027 or later, which is one way to never look outdated.
The footer year is the cheapest freshness signal on the web and one of the most visible, and it is wrong in both directions.
Finally, the longest redirect chain we followed took six hops: six addresses in a row, each one saying not here, try there, before a page finally appeared.
Why we can say any of this
These figures come from a near-census, not a sample. We measured 293,806 of the 306,872 Baltic domains in our frame, between 88% and 96% of each country’s web, with standard HTTP, DNS and TLS reads, a rendered browser visit and a Google PageSpeed run per site, all from one fixed location in Helsinki with a crawler that identified itself honestly on every request.
