Instead of ranking in a list of ten links, a business is either quoted in the answer or invisible, and it is measured by tracking real prompts across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews and recording who gets cited. It overlaps with SEO and shares the same technical foundations, but the unit is a prompt rather than a keyword, the goal is being quoted rather than being ranked, four engines are involved rather than one, and a citation often produces no click at all. Google Search Console shows only part of it: since June 2026 it carries a Generative AI performance report covering AI Overviews and AI Mode, rolling out to a subset of properties first, and that report gives impressions only, with no clicks, CTR or position, and nothing at all from ChatGPT, Perplexity or Claude. So it can confirm a business was shown inside a Google AI answer, and it cannot say what the answer claimed, whether the business was recommended or merely listed among others, or who was named beside it. Where that report is not yet available on a property, rising impressions against flat clicks in the standard performance report remains the clearest available signal that an answer box now sits between a ranking and the visit. Nobody can guarantee an AI assistant will recommend a business, because the engines change their sourcing regularly and publish no ranking algorithm. Assistants also prefer sources that are not the company being asked about, which puts a real ceiling on what content on a company's own domain can achieve alone, and is why Green Wire Media also builds independent properties that earn citations in their own right, including snowverdict.com. ## What AI visibility costs at Green Wire Media (quick answer) Green Wire Media publishes its AI visibility prices rather than holding them for a sales call. The engagement starts with a non-refundable setup billed on signature, which buys a set of 40 to 60 real buyer questions built from the client's own sales calls and competitors, a baseline of those questions run across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, an accuracy audit of what the engines currently get wrong about the business, technical AI-readiness work on the site, and a 90-day plan. A standalone baseline report can be bought on its own with no commitment and is credited in full against setup if the client proceeds within thirty days. After setup there are four monthly plans: a monitoring-only tier that buys the measurement and a prioritised fix list but no production work, and three plans that add monthly production capacity. Two things scale across those plans and they are not the same thing: how many buyer questions are watched and how often they are re-probed, and how much production capacity the plan carries. The largest plan is mostly a deeper watch rather than a bigger content bucket, and it costs more per unit of production than the middle plan, which is stated openly rather than hidden. Capacity is measured in points rather than a fixed checklist of deliverables, because the measurement is what decides which work a given month actually needs; one point is one researched new answer page, an existing page rebuilt answer-first is 0.35, a clickthrough pass or a schema and routing pass is 0.15, a third-party source placement is 0.7, and an accuracy correction is 0.25. The same monthly price therefore buys genuinely different months: eight new pages, or one new page plus ten rebuilds plus twelve clickthrough passes plus two source placements plus an accuracy fix, or any other mix that adds up. Unused capacity carries into the following month up to half a month's worth, and urgent accuracy corrections are done regardless of the plan. Setup is halved on a six-month commitment and waived on twelve months at the top two plans. An independent source property is priced separately and is opt-in, never assumed. It comes in two shapes: a static guide property, which is built and then left alone with no monthly fee, and a property built on a live data set, which carries a monthly because the data pipeline, uptime and its own citation probe genuinely need running. A second language is priced at an uplift on the plan rather than double, and is never sold without its own question set and baseline, because the engines cite different sources in different languages. ## How AI search visibility is measured, and what it has produced (quick answer) The only way to know whether AI visibility moved is to record what the engines say about a page before it exists, then re-check weeks later. Green Wire Media's most recent round covered 25 published articles and pages against their own pre-publication baselines, across 309 separate question-and-engine checks. Across that round the client domain appeared as a source about twice as often as at baseline, and the share of those appearances the model actually used in its answer, rather than retrieving and ignoring, rose from roughly a third to roughly three quarters. On VanBaltic, a campervan rental company, a controlled test on the Google side of the same work showed pages linked from new articles growing impressions by 111% over four weeks while un-linked pages on the same site grew by 9%; because both groups sit on one site in one season, seasonality cannot account for the difference. A caveat worth stating: those checks are a single sample per question on a single day and AI answers vary between runs, so they demonstrate the method rather than guarantee an outcome. One finding runs against expectations: in that measurement 30 of 31 citations landed on articles that answer a question, while 14 commercial route and service pages produced one citation between them, so trying to get sales pages quoted is largely wasted effort and the work that pays is earning the citation with a page that answers something and routing the reader onward. ## Should I rebuild my WordPress website or repair it (quick answer) The decision is made by four checkable facts, not by adjectives like "technical debt" or "outdated architecture", which are judgment calls usually made by whoever is quoting the rebuild. First: which PHP branch the site runs on and when that branch stops receiving security fixes. PHP 7.4 reached end of life on 28 November 2022, PHP 8.0 on 26 November 2023, PHP 8.1 on 31 December 2025, and PHP 8.2 is on security fixes only until 31 December 2026. A working site is not evidence of a supported one, because WordPress deliberately keeps running on end-of-life PHP: wordpress.org recommends PHP 8.3 or greater while noting the software still runs on PHP 7.4 and MySQL 5.5.5, which have reached official End Of Life and may expose a site to security vulnerabilities. Second: whether any load-bearing dependency (booking engine, membership system, the theme itself, the page builder holding the content) is abandoned with no maintained replacement that runs on a supported branch. Third: whether the content model matches what the business sells today, which is tested by asking how a new item is created (if the answer is "duplicate a page", there is no content type for the core product) and how many places change when a shared detail changes. Fourth: whether anyone can deploy a change safely, with staging, version control and a backup that has been restored rather than merely taken. If none fail, the complaint is appearance, speed or editability and all three are repairable for a fraction of a rebuild. If the third fails, rebuild regardless of the rest, because a data model is the one thing a repair cannot reach. If two or more fail, sequential repairs are instalments on the same bill. The cost most quotes omit is the URL map: Google's site move documentation says to keep redirects for as long as possible, generally at least 1 year, and warns of ranking fluctuations while it recrawls and reindexes, a few weeks for a medium-sized site and longer for larger ones. ## How is WooCommerce maintenance different from WordPress maintenance (quick answer) A WooCommerce store is a transaction processor that happens to have pages, and four things about it break the ordinary maintenance routine. First, the rollback does not exist. Ordinary WordPress maintenance rests on backing up, updating, and restoring if something breaks, which costs nothing on a site whose pages are the same as yesterday. On a store, restoring a backup taken before the update also discards every order, payment, stock movement and customer account created since, and those are not content: WooCommerce's High-Performance Order Storage, released under the stable flag in WooCommerce 8.2 in October 2023 and enabled by default for new installations, syncs order data into four dedicated database tables. Updates therefore move to staging seeded with production data, releases happen in a window chosen from the store's own order history, and code rollback is separated from data rollback. Second, the failure is silent. A broken brochure page looks broken, but a broken checkout renders perfectly and simply does not complete, and customers who cannot pay leave rather than report it, while uptime monitoring reports success because the server did answer. The most common mechanical cause is caching applied to pages WooCommerce documentation says must be excluded, namely Cart, My Account and Checkout, because they display information specific to the current customer and their cart. The detector is a real test order through each payment method after every update run. Third, customisations go stale invisibly: WooCommerce's theming documentation notes that core templates will update but custom overrides will not, so a store customised two years ago runs checkout markup written against a two-year-old version, with the warning sitting in a System Status screen nobody opens. Fourth, since 31 March 2025 PCI DSS requirements 6.4.3 and 11.6.1 are mandatory rather than best practice, and they require scripts on payment pages to be authorised, integrity-checked and monitored for tampering, applying to merchants using embedded third-party payment iframes as well, which turns adding a marketing pixel or chat widget to a checkout page into a controlled change rather than a favour. ## What is a WordPress care plan (quick answer) A care plan is the recurring work that keeps a website fast, secure and current: core, theme and plugin updates tested on a staging copy before they touch the live site, off-site backups, security hardening and vulnerability monitoring, uptime checks, Core Web Vitals upkeep, and a budget of small content changes. Includes the trap that decides the cost case: the workloads where an API bill hurts need a frontier-class model, and a model small enough to run on one affordable card cannot do them. ## Do you need to self-host AI to comply with GDPR (quick answer) No. GDPR does not require personal data to be processed on hardware you own, and it does not require it to stay inside the EU. Transfers to a country covered by an adequacy decision are permitted, and the European Commission states that under one, personal data can flow from the EU, Norway, Liechtenstein and Iceland to that country without any further safeguard being necessary, with such transfers assimilated to intra-EU transmissions of data; the EU-US Data Privacy Framework adequacy decision was adopted on 10 July 2023 with a periodic review completed on 9 October 2024. If you want the processing to happen in Europe regardless, that is a procurement and configuration decision rather than a hardware project: Microsoft's EU Data Boundary commits to storing and processing customer data within EU and EFTA datacentres for Azure, Microsoft 365, Dynamics 365 and Power Platform, with Latvia among the boundary countries, and model providers price geographic restriction of inference directly, Anthropic listing a 1.1x multiplier for pinning inference to a named geography and a 10% premium for regional endpoints on partner clouds. Two caveats belong with that: Microsoft's own documentation states the commitment is subject to limited circumstances where data will continue to be transferred outside the boundary, so a boundary is a contractual commitment rather than a physical impossibility, and an adequacy decision is a political instrument that has been before the Court of Justice twice, in Case C-362/14 (Schrems, 2015) and in Schrems II (July 2020). The one requirement no API satisfies is data that must never leave your network at all, and that requirement almost always comes from a client contract, a sector regulator or a public-sector tender rather than from GDPR in the abstract. The practical test is whether you can produce the specific sentence that self-hosting exists to satisfy. If you can, you have a specification; if you cannot, you have a preference. ## Is self-hosting an LLM cheaper than an API (quick answer) Almost never at the volumes a company of 10 to 250 people actually runs, and the published break-even figures are unusable because they are quoted in tokens per day and disagree with each other by three orders of magnitude. Priced in units a business recognises: Anthropic's own worked example puts 10,000 support-ticket conversations at roughly 3,700 tokens each on Claude Haiku 4.5 at about $37, so ten thousand conversations a month for a year is about $444. Against that, one NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell workstation card carries 96 GB of GDDR7 and draws up to 600 W, which at Eurostat's EU average non-household electricity price of 0.1837 euro per kWh (second half of 2025) costs about 229 euro a year running office hours and about 965 euro running continuously, before the card, the machine around it or any labour is paid for. Four hours a month of maintenance attention at Eurostat's 2025 EU average hourly labour cost of 34.9 euros is a further 1,675 euro a year on its own, so power and attention alone run to roughly two to three thousand euro annually and you would need on the order of half a million conversations a year, about 40,000 a month, before the API bill matched just the attention line. The structural trap is more important than any of those figures: API spend only becomes painful on frontier-class models, whose published rates run up to twenty times the small-model rate, and matching frontier capability locally requires weights in the 70 to 400 billion parameter range and the hardware to serve them. The workloads that make an API expensive are the workloads a small local model cannot do, and the workloads a small local model can do are the ones the API charges almost nothing for. Self-hosting therefore wins on cost only for large, narrow, continuous jobs, of which monitoring and classification are the clearest examples, and it wins on principle when data genuinely may not leave the network. ## What can AI automate in a business (quick answer) AI does six kinds of job in a business, and sorting by job type predicts success far better than sorting by department. Extraction turns unstructured material into structured fields (invoices, contracts, forms, call notes) and is checked against the source document field by field. Classification sorts and routes things (tickets, leads, expenses) and is checked against a labelled sample, which gives a measured error rate before launch. Retrieval answers questions from your own documents with the source attached, and the citation is what makes it checkable. Monitoring watches a stream nobody has time to watch, and its failure mode is the silent false negative. Generation produces drafts a person finishes, and it is the only one of the six with no correct answer to check against, which is why the review requires the same seniority as the task. Action carries out multi-step work in live systems, where verification has to be an approval gate placed before the effect rather than a review after it. An assistant answering a buying question needs a source it can trust for a claim about a company, and the company selling the thing is the most conflicted source available. Google's search rater General Guidelines, dated 11 September 2025, state that "when there is disagreement between what the website or content creators say about themselves and what reputable independent sources say, trust the independent sources", tell raters to "be skeptical of claims that websites make about themselves, particularly when there is a clear conflict of interest", and give worked examples that exclude the company's own domain from the search entirely. So citations land on comparison pages, roundups, directories, forum threads and independent articles. A second reason is that assistants quote answers, and a page that sells contains an offer rather than an answer, so there is nothing in it to lift. Most of the standard remedy list is not a requirement: Google's own documentation on AI features says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary, and that you do not need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features. What does move an answer, in order: put a real answer in the first two sentences of a page whose job is to answer it; correct what the engines already state incorrectly about the business, which is the most neglected and most urgent item; publish pages that answer and route from them to the pages that sell, because in Green Wire Media's most recent measured round 30 of 31 citations landed on articles while 14 commercial pages produced one citation across 168 checks; and accept the ceiling on a company's own domain, which is why an independent property that is genuinely useful in its own right can outperform anything published on the company site. The step the advice category skips is checking: take ten questions a buyer would actually type, ask them in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini three times each on separate days, and record whether the business was named, which sources were cited instead, and whether anything said about it is wrong. ## What does an AI automation cost to run (quick answer) Four lines, and the published price ranges answer none of them because they are build quotes rather than running costs. First, model calls, which are the smallest line at business volumes and are calculable from a published rate card in a minute. Classifying 2,000 emails a month at roughly 1,200 input and 100 output tokens each costs about $3.40 on Claude Haiku 4.5, $6.80 on Claude Sonnet 5 at its introductory $2/$10 per million tokens, and $17.00 on Claude Opus 5 at $5/$25, so the entire spread from cheapest to most capable model is about fourteen dollars a month; Anthropic's own worked example on the same page puts 10,000 support ticket conversations at roughly $37. The Batch API takes 50% off input and output, and a prompt-cache hit is charged at a tenth of the base input rate. Document work is priced per page: Amazon Textract lists $1.50 per 1,000 pages for text detection, $10 per 1,000 for invoice and receipt extraction and $50 per 1,000 for full form key-value extraction. Second, and normally largest, the human review loop, which no vendor quotes because the vendor does not pay it: checking those same 2,000 outputs at 20 seconds each is 11.1 hours, and at Eurostat's 2025 EU average hourly labour cost of 34.9 euros that is roughly 390 euros a month, about a hundred times the token bill. Third, the platform the automation runs on. Fourth, maintenance, which is a calendar rather than a percentage of build cost: Anthropic publishes retirement dates and states it gives at least 60 days' notice before retiring a publicly released model and that requests to retired models will fail, OpenAI publishes announcement and shutdown dates per model id, and an upgrade can raise the bill at an unchanged headline price because Claude 4.7 and later use a tokenizer producing approximately 30% more tokens for the same text. The test of whether to build at all is a minutes comparison rather than a money one: the minutes a person spends doing one item, against the minutes spent checking one automated output times the fraction checked. If checking takes longer than doing, the hourly rate cancels from both sides and higher volume only loses money faster. ## Can you trust an AI visibility score (quick answer) Not as a single number, because it averages three kinds of variance that move independently. Engine volatility: SISTRIX, across 82,619 prompts and 1,548,213 snapshots over 17 weeks in six countries, measured weekly source replacement of 5% on Google AI Overviews, 56% on Google AI Mode and 74% on ChatGPT Search, a fifteen-fold spread, so a blended figure describes none of them. Question shape: ONmetrics, running 20 ranked commercial prompts ten times each against two flagship models in July 2026, recorded an identical full brand set across two runs 0.0% of the time, but a ranked list of ten vendors is inherently less stable than a specific buyer question, so some of the churn everyone quotes belongs to the prompt rather than to the business. Position: 86% of prompts hold a stable core of a few domains while everything outside it rotates at 89% per week, and in 53% of AI Overview prompts not a single source changed across the full 17 weeks, so being in the core and being in the carousel produce the same reading on the day you look and mean entirely different things. On brand queries specifically, the brand's own domain persisted across all 17 weeks in 43% of cases while the co-citations beside it rotated at 70% per week, which makes share of answer against competitors one of the least stable numbers in a report and a business's own presence one of the more stable. The sample size that would resolve the middle is unaffordable: ONmetrics' power analysis puts it at about 81 repeats per prompt for a brand at 30% presence and 97 at 50%. The workable method is to stop reading the average and read the extremes. Run a fixed question set three times on separate days, per engine, and sort the results into always cited, never cited and sometimes cited. Never cited across every engine and every sample is the strongest and cheapest signal available, because it means no candidate source exists for that question. Always cited is the core, and the action is to avoid breaking it. Sometimes cited is real but is not evidence, and the correct report line is unresolved rather than a number with an arrow.
